{"id":265,"date":"2015-04-06T18:32:25","date_gmt":"2015-04-06T17:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonewwars.co.uk\/blog\/?p=265"},"modified":"2015-04-06T18:38:19","modified_gmt":"2015-04-06T17:38:19","slug":"the-horrors-of-war-the-gueules-cassees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nonewwars.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/04\/the-horrors-of-war-the-gueules-cassees\/","title":{"rendered":"The horrors of war: the gueules cass\u00e9es"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I believe <em>gueules cass\u00e9es<\/em> is French for &#8216;broken faces&#8217; or &#8216;broken jaws&#8217; (I know not which) and is the term used for the French men who had their faces blown off in the Great War.<\/p>\n<p>Some 15 million men were crippled by the Great War.\u00a0 In the UK alone by the late 1930s there were still over half a million men receiving pensions for physical disability caused by that war (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/pathways\/firstworldwar\/aftermath\/counting_cost.htm\" target=\"_blank\">National Archive<\/a>).\u00a0 And then there were those who remained in hospital for the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>The nature of trench warfare is such that the face is often the most exposed part of the body meaning the Great War &#8211; with its shrapnel and grenades &#8211; was the cause of a huge increase in the number of severe facial wounds.\u00a0 Also, battlefield medicine began to improve during that war increasing the likelihood of wounded men surviving terrible wounds that would have previously been fatal.<\/p>\n<p>But what happens to a young man with no lower jaw or a hole in his skull where his nose was?\u00a0 And in France losing ones face was not considered a disability so they received no pension, despite being unable to go out in public.<\/p>\n<p><b>L\u00e9on Dufourmentel<\/b> (1884 \u2013 1957) was a French surgeon responsible for caring for the <i><a class=\"extiw\" title=\"fr:Gueules cass\u00e9es\" href=\"http:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gueules_cass%C3%A9es\">gueules cass\u00e9es <\/a><\/i>and was innovative finding methods for repairing facial wounds by transferring flaps of skin from the scalp to, for example, the chin.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently five of his patients were taken from the hospital to the Palace of Versailles for the signing of the peace treaty in 1919.<\/p>\n<p>Such people are still supported in France &#8211; because soldiers are still being shot in the face &#8211; through the <em>Union des Bless\u00e9s de la Face et de la T\u00eate<\/em> (Union for those with Facial and Head Injuries) and the <em>Foundation for Gueules Cass\u00e9es<\/em> are.\u00a0 They organise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gueules-cassees-2014.org\/en\/colloque\/\" target=\"_blank\">international events<\/a> to raise awareness and funding.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you choose to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=gueules+cass%C3%A9es&amp;tbm=isch\" target=\"_blank\">a Google image search<\/a> for the term is up to you.\u00a0 They are seriously horrid pictures.\u00a0 They are the sort of images the media are prevented from portraying during a war for fear of upsetting morale.\u00a0 Whether you call that sensible censorship or propaganda is up to you.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively view the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.tracesofwar.com\/article\/34986\/Traces-of-War-War-Memorial-Tr%E9vi%E8res.htm\" target=\"_blank\">war memorial<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tr%C3%A9vi%C3%A8res\" target=\"_blank\">Tr\u00e9vi\u00e8res<\/a> to the dead of 1914-18.\u00a0 She was herself maimed in the Second World War and now stands as an inadvertent representative of the broken faces.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tracesofwar.com\/article\/34986\/Traces-of-War-War-Memorial-Tr%E9vi%E8res.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tracesofwar.com\/upload\/2894130106171500.JPG\" alt=\"The War Memorial at Tr\u00e9vi\u00e8res with her lower jaw blown off\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The War Memorial at Tr\u00e9vi\u00e8res. Taken from Traces of War.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I write this, there is nothing on the English language Wikipedia about the <em>gueules cass\u00e9es<\/em>.\u00a0 Nowadays plastic surgery is commonplace, even expected of the rich and famous &#8211; every day the newspapers and news web sites are littered with such &#8216;news&#8217;.\u00a0 But nothing much is said about those who suffered and made it necessary for innovative techniques in surgery to be invented.\u00a0 Perhaps a little more exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guinea_Pig_Club\" target=\"_blank\">the horrors of war<\/a>, and a little less <a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/20\/google-doubles-down-demands-review-of-all-antiwar-com-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">commercial censorship<\/a>, rather than glorifying and sanitising war by\u00a0 the media and search engines, might not go amiss.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I believe gueules cass\u00e9es is French for &#8216;broken faces&#8217; or &#8216;broken jaws&#8217; (I know not which) and is the term used for the French men who had their faces blown off in the Great War.
