{"id":367,"date":"2015-08-29T22:20:53","date_gmt":"2015-08-29T21:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonewwars.co.uk\/blog\/?p=367"},"modified":"2015-08-30T21:30:02","modified_gmt":"2015-08-30T20:30:02","slug":"masters-degree-in-peace-studies-what-to-think-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nonewwars.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/08\/masters-degree-in-peace-studies-what-to-think-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Master&#8217;s degree in Peace Studies &#8211; what to think about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A useful resource for what to think about when considering doing a master&#8217;s degree is the postgrad digital magazine from prospects.ac.uk, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects.ac.uk\/links\/postgradmag\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It includes tips on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>questions to ask at a postgraduate fair (what the universities call their visiting days or open days, I presume) such as &#8220;How did last year&#8217;s students obtain funding?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>that one should apply at least eight months before the course starts<\/li>\n<li>how to write a personal statement (whatever one of those is)<\/li>\n<li>studying abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I am shopping around at the moment for where to do such a master&#8217;s degree I have lots of questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do I want a master&#8217;s degree or a research master&#8217;s degree?<\/li>\n<li>What modules make up the degree?\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>and are they relevant for my career aspirations?<\/li>\n<li>and will I learn stuff I want to learn?<\/li>\n<li>and will I learn stuff I need to learn?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Will an Honours Degree in Philosophy and Psychology qualify me for the course?<\/li>\n<li>What are the fees?<\/li>\n<li>What funding options are there?<\/li>\n<li>Is it \u201cmaster&#8217;s degree\u201d or \u201cmasters degree\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>How long is it?\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>If it is for two years, does one attend in the second year?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Will I be doing a PhD after the master&#8217;s degree?\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Will this master&#8217;s degree help m get onto a PhD course?<\/li>\n<li>Should I do an MPhil instead?<\/li>\n<li>Or maybe an MRes?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Will it still be running when I want to do it?<\/li>\n<li>How realistic for me is the geographic location?<\/li>\n<li>Will it be prestigious?<\/li>\n<li>Is the title of the master&#8217;s degree a suitable one?<\/li>\n<li>How many ECTS credits is it worth?\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>How many ECTS credits do I need \/ want?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regarding the ECTS business, ECTS is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findamasters.com\/study-abroad\/europe\/#The-European-Credit-Transfer-and-Accumulation-System-%28ECTS%29\" target=\"_blank\">European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System<\/a>.\u00a0 A degree earns credits which are transferable across Europe.\u00a0 Typically, each year is worth 60 ECTS credits where each credit is about 25 to 30 hours of work.\u00a0 Most European master&#8217;s programmes (&#8216;programmes&#8217; seems to be what they call them) are worth 90-120 ECTS credits.\u00a0 However, UK master&#8217;s degrees only last one year and are\u2014supposedly\u2014worth 180 UK credits where two UK credits are equivalent to one ECTS credit.\u00a0 However, I can see some UK master&#8217;s degrees are worth only 60 ECTS credits rather than 90.\u00a0 The Open University says two of its credits are equivalent to one ECTS credit, so an OU master&#8217;s degree (180 OU credits) is 90 ECTS credits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A useful resource for what to think about when considering doing a master&#8217;s degree is the postgrad digital magazine from prospects.ac.uk, here.
