they do not include lots of things a strict pacifist would like to see included.\u00a0 As I start writing this, the number is based on their 2016 figures and is <span id=\"raw\">\u00a3509,860,928,935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yes, global spending on militarisation (essentially, preparing for killing people), is five hundred thousand million pounds.\u00a0 A million pounds, spent, half a million times.<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, nobody wants to spend the \u00a311,000m to \u00a323,000m it would take to cure the whole world&#8217;s 185m people with Hepatitis C.\u00a0 But we have spent \u00a3509,000m on arms so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>(Hepatitis C treatment is the most expensive medicine in the USA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/05\/150517143506.htm\">link<\/a>.\u00a0 Details of the cost of curing it, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natap.org\/2014\/HCV\/081114_03.htm\">link<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it is time for me to update the web site because military spending figures for 2017 have been released.\u00a0 And it has gone up by about 1.1%, once inflation has been taken out.\u00a0 As an absolute sum just <em>the difference<\/em> is about \u00a347,287m.\u00a0 <span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Military spending in 2017 represented 2.2% of the global gross domestic product.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>(For reference, feeding the world&#8217;s starving people would cost <a href=\"https:\/\/borgenproject.org\/the-cost-to-end-world-hunger\/\">\u00a323,000m<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionofearth.org\/economics\/ending-poverty\/how-much-would-it-cost-to-end-extreme-poverty-in-the-world\/\">\u00a3132,000m<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/hungermath.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/08\/how-much-would-it-cost-to-end-world-hunger\/\">somewhere in between<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>So, I have updated the script and now the number, based on the new 2017 figures, is <span id=\"raw\">\u00a3524,852,595,454 so far this year.<br \/>\n<\/span><span id=\"raw\">\u00a3524,853,983,114<br \/>\n<\/span><span id=\"raw\">\u00a3524,854,467,457<br \/>\n<\/span><span id=\"raw\">\u00a3524,854,865,718<br \/>\n<\/span><span id=\"raw\">\u00a3524,855,841,115<br \/>\n\u00a3524,873,308,033\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the Conscience:Taxes for Peace not War home page is a counter showing the global military spending so far this year.\u00a0 It comes from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute&#8217;s (SIPRI) figures.\u00a0 We use those because they are not particularly &hellip;
