A state that really did have a monopoly of legitimate force would have no reason to exist. Think of a state in which everyone acted peacefully and regarded all laws as legitimate. It would be wholly redundant!&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"782c8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"782c8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"782c8-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"cp05q-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" style=\"text-align: right;\" data-offset-key=\"cp05q-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cp05q-0-0\">(Hoffman, 2007, p. 45)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"uviu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"uviu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"uviu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"en4rj-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" style=\"text-align: right;\" data-offset-key=\"en4rj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"en4rj-0-0\">Hoffman, J. (eds) <em>The Impact of Feminism on Political Concepts and Debates<\/em>, Manchester, Manchester University Press.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"en837-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"en837-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"en837-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"ffn84-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ffn84-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ffn84-0-0\">Meaning: it is in the interests of the state to ensure there is always a threat of violence to its citizens to ensure its own survival as the &#8216;protector&#8217;. Or rather, the fear of the threat of violence.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"e7pf2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"e7pf2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"e7pf2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7b6h7\" data-offset-key=\"6j8tr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6j8tr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6j8tr-0-0\">So, the state is required to keep its citizens in a state of fear to ensure its own continuance. Scary stuff.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6j8tr-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6j8tr-0-0\">\n<div data-contents=\"true\">\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1ie5c\" data-offset-key=\"2c7gh-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"2c7gh-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2c7gh-0-0\">Now, since we know you are not a criminal until you have been found guilty of a crime, the &#8216;criminals&#8217; Priti Patel refers to here must in fact by &#8216;citizens&#8217;, i.e., everyone who might break a law whether or not they have done so.
